middlelife
My memory is made of images — some I’ve made, some I’ve taken.
These millions of moments captured on silicon are stored and ready for recall, if I can locate them. They fill dozens of hard drives, stacked on shelves like the photo albums my mother kept. Together these photographs remember me and remember for me. I trust them because they tell me who I believe I am.
the sequel
This show is the second installment of the middlelife series. The first iteration explored the photographics of memory through a retrospective of my photojournalism work. middlelife ii considers the same theme but through the lens of where my family originates.
My parents are from opposite sides of the world — the son of a Indian factory worker and the daughter of a Wisconsin farmer. I’ve photographed throughout the countries where they were born, most recently by train.
These otherwise disconnected photographic observations through the countryside and cityscapes of India and America find familiarity in their pairings with one another. These diptychs sourced from two different places create new comprehension at their intersection. Somewhat inter-dimensionally, this is the place where I’m from.
sounds of music
Inspired by travels and stories gathered along the Indian and American rails, I’ve written and recorded The First Sounds, an album of train songs that accompanies this show.
The album may be listened to in the gallery on available headphones or streamed wherever you listen. Search: ’Raj Saint Paul’
